#FreeOnSmash should be the Twitter tag of the week.
December 8, 2010

Last episode, I was putting together people we could talk on the show and one of the individuals we wanted to speak with was Legend, curator and new music cartel extraordinaire of OnSmash.com.  Reason being that recently they were the victims of I.C.E.'s latest round of website shutdowns along with DaJaz1 and RapGodFathers.  Unfortunately, he couldn't talk about the situation on the show due to the current legal situation, which is kind of frustrating considering all we can speculate is that OnSmash was shut down simply because they posted singles and videos on their site.  So why would homeland security be concerned with these sites?  Apparently they felt that OnSmash could be lumped in with one of the largest hip-hop bootlegging sites out there (RapGodFathers) not to mention a list of large torrent (download) sites which, in my opinion, is absolute b.s.

Regardless, they have been completely shut down and if you would like to support OnSmash's case, please send and email to freeonsmash@gmail.com and if you're a fan, tell them how you feel about the site, and if you're an artist, let them know how their existence and sites like them impact you as an artist.  If you're on Twitter throw that #freeonsmash hash tag around too. Hit the jump for our discussion on this topic from Episode #128 of the HoodHype show.

So here's the conversation we had on the last episode of the show about the whole situation.

On a side note, I want to point out that the point I was trying to make when I said these hip-hop site's "barely register on the internet in the grand scheme of things" was not that they have weak traffic or they aren't that good.  My point was that the gov't would have had no idea they existed had someone not made a point to notify them.  I stick by my theory that some artist or business got salty over OnSmash not working with them and reported them to I.C.E., otherwise they wouldn't have even registered on the radar.

Also, the WHOLE show isn't live on the site yet, so if you want to get in on the show before anyone on the website, you can subscribe to download our show for free in iTunes, by clicking here or you can follow us on facebook and get the show first here, or you can look us up on Zune Marketplace if you're a zune user, or if you use RSS point your feed reader here!
