HoodHype’s visit to the Van’s Warped Tour
July 27, 2011

Headed out to the Van's Warped Tour Detroit stop, we figured we could pick up a couple of quick interviews with the few hip-hop acts they had on tap as well as some show footage.  What we brought back was some footage and an experience far different than what I expected.  Above is some footage and music from a genre that doesn't normally appear our site and show, but you know that if we experience something fresh and exciting, it's a must we share it.  Annnnd I'm using this as to backup my argument against Major.  I feel (reluctantly) that rock shows put on far more entertaining live shows than hip-hop.  Watch this video we put together and I challenge you to tell me or show me a hip-hop show that induces this kind of mayhem and insanity.

I've been to a lot of live shows.  A lot.  If you listen to the HoodHype show, you know a regular complaint of mine is the lack of showmanship in hip-hop.  And while there are some artists that can definitely rock a crowd, most pale in comparison to the rock shows I experienced at the Warped Tour in Detroit.  Granted, the only "rock" show I've ever been to is Lenny Kravitz (outside of seeing local bands at bars).

Figuring I'd see a lot of 15 year-olds doing a lot of dumb shit (and I did), I assumed I was going to be in, get my hip-hop footage and get out.  But as my buddy Matt and I started finding our way around the stages, we got a little curious and decided to veer off to check out some of the rock shows.  Why not? We had the rest of the day to kill and the energy was crazy.  So we grabbed a beer, took in the sights (bikini tops and crazy hair dos), sounds (heavy rock, punk, rap and ska), smells (Patchouli oil, fried bred, sweat and pot) and made our way to the press pit of the main stage where a group called D.R.U.G.S. (Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows ) was performing. No idea who these guys were, but there was a massive crowd so they must have been a pretty big deal to the rock heads.

The crowd was insane, shoes, flip-flops and water bottles flying everywhere, people screaming, kids ribs and chests getting mashed up against the barricade stage side all piling on top of each other waiting for their band to come out.  And when they did, sweet baby Jesus, I've never experienced such an insane reaction.  It was as if the entire crowd was one giant organism moving in unison, shifting from left to right, while pouring a perpetual human waterfall of crowdsurfers into the pit over the barricade.  Thank God there was an incredibly patient security crew, catching each person as they were thrown over the barricade.

Absolute mayhem.... relatively speaking.

At a hip-hop show, I'm used to seeing hands in the air and a sparse crowd swaying from left to right to the beat.  Very seldom have I seen a hip-hop that comes close to comparing to the energy and insanity I experienced here.  And although rock isn't my thing, and I WAS there for the few hip-hop acts they had on hand (footage of Grieves and MC Lars is coming soon), I have to say that I will definitely be making my way back to the Warped Tour as long as they keep returning to Detroit.
