I had a hard time trying to write this post because we’re kind of close to this project, not creatively, but more on a personal, empathetic level. We know these guys personally, and I wanted to write an unbiased post with no slant whatsoever because that’s what we try to do here (that’s partially a lie). But that wouldn’t be honest to you guys or .KOM.
We were first introduced to Kingz Of The Mic (the duo, T.O. & Joka) a few years ago when they were working on their first project. We interviewed them on the show, Major was talking to them regularly and over time started a good friendship with these guys. Being 30+ year-old hip-hop head I subconsciously made assumptions about these guys, these… “kids”. I mean what do a couple of college-age kids know? Y’know? I discovered T.O., was a really forward-thinking, business-minded type of cat and very, (VERY) motivated and fast-paced kind of dude. Very passionate and excited about his group. Then you have Joka, who is the ultra-creative, introspective, laid back type of person who comes across (to me) as an old soul (I hope he doesn’t take offense to that) that is really in tune with himself and his craft. For their age, I guess I didn’t expect these guys to be so far ahead of the game. But they are.
Watching these guys evolve and grow has not only been an inspiration on a personal level but also motivation and justification that what we do here at HoodHype is a good thing. Supporting artists and music we believe in. So thank you Kingz Of The Mic for fueling the fire and congratulations on finally releasing your sophomore album 3.0. I know Major and the rest of the team here are just as excited as I am, so cheers to you guys and your team.
My standout tracks on this album were “Abortion”, “Give Me a Moment”, “Wake Up”, “Windows Down”. Make sure you check out their artwork too, these guys went the extra mile trying to put together a well-crafted album.
And it’s free.
