Mookie Jones. An artist we never even heard about until we saw him during Big K.R.I.T.’s Return Of 4 Eva tour. He was one of the opening acts along with Smoke DZA, Freddie Gibbs and Jackie Chain. I remember Mookie took the stage and eventually got into his lead single from his debut album Tuskeegee titled “Pineapple Express”, “See it smell it buy it sell it”, the hook was etched in my brain for the night, and many days to follow. The song was hot as hell. After he left the stage Phro pulled him aside and asked him “yo let us buy you a drink homie, we need to get a quick interview” to which Mookie replied “hell yeah, grab me a Grand Marnier with a twist”. Phro grabbed the drink, we jumped up to the green room and this interview to happened .
In the interview with Major he spoke on P.A.N. and here it is. It’s nothing short of a well crafted album and Mookie definitely delivered. He’s a funny dude though, Mookie, because it’s like the title plays into what he’s doing to your hip-hop “spidey sense” throughout P.A.N.. For me being a purist (partially), I found that the album was somewhat like a rollercoaster with peaks and valleys throughout. You’ll hear songs like “Ladies Man”, obviously geared to the female audience, but then as if he knew you’d be pulling away, he throws a song like “Skeleton Key” in the mix as if to say, “yeah I saw you starting to turn the volume down…..better stop that shit and let me remind you how good I am lyrically”. Well played Mookie, well played. Call it lyrical fishing, #autooo.
