I sometimes wonder if half of these bloggers even listen to the music they post and do more than simply skim through to make sure the production is tight because I have yet to see anyone address the actual CONTENT of this album.
Now let me be honest and preface what I’m about to say before I step up on this here soap box. I’m pretty superficial too. When it comes to music, I find myself quite often thumbing down music for the show just because I don’t like how it sounds, before I even pay attention to the subject matter. Sue me, I believe music is entertainment and at its core, if you can’t listen to it all the way through, then you can’t listen to it at all. No passes. I’m a fan of music and I think like a music fan. I don’t care if the answer to the DaVinci code is in the damn song, I’m not listening if I can’t feel the vibe.
All that being said, that’s certainly not the case for Johnny Spanish’s latest 8-track effort completely produced by Ghost Beats. The production is real nice and the lyrics, well let’s just say I didn’t realize Johnny was going to go left field like he did. Pay attention to that album title before you peel off the virtual plastic wrap too. It means something.
Addressing everything from the origins of hip-hop and what it’s become, hatred in the industry and on the internet, consumerism, the plight of the native American, the list goes on. It sounds crazy right? Remember that album title. Getting the theme yet? I know you’re used to shallow themes and ideas so it may take a minute to sink in…. I’ll wait. Got it? Okay good, now download the album and hear for yourself what I’m talking about.
On a side note, Johnny sent this in over a month ago and admittedly I didn’t get around to listening to the album until recently (holidays). Granted, HoodHype isn’t the almighty gatekeeper to the success of an indie album nor do we claim to be. But it is our site and we tend to take our time to actually go through an album, listen to it thoroughly and then post it. If we’re going to share it with you guys, then we want you to trust that we’re posting good music. Period. I’m actually a bit saddened that out of the other places I found this album, very seldom did anyone take the time to try to get the subject matter within it. Johnny’s experimenting, and personally I fully support that. I hope he finds his groove, he definitely seems like he almost has it.
