All too often, I'll see and hear stories about artists who have been in the "business" for a long time and tend stay below the radar.  Sometimes intentionally, sometimes not.  Whichever the case is for The Definition is irrelevant because these guys are easily one of Detroit's best kept secrets.   Made up of a drummer, bass guitarist, a keyboardist, a classically trained electric cellist (yes, thats right) and hard hitter spitter MC front man (Mola1), these guys are known for their crazy shows, that a lot of times,  will outperform the acts they open for....

If you're in the metro-Detroit area, you would be crazy to miss this show at the Crofoot in Pontiac with The Definition, Detroit's Paradime and headliner Action Bronson this Friday (5/25).  Make sure you support that REAL indie hip-hop and buy some tickets to this show!  We'll definitely be in the  house too!

Also, front man MOLA1 will be LIVE on the show with us tonight!

Man I never saw the original.  It always looked extremely boring to me.  But I have to admit this new trailer has me wanting to go back, watch the original, then go see this.  Nicely done Mr. Film Studio exec.

I'm absolutely infatuated with Detroit's history and music is a massive part of that for me which is why I'm excited about Motown's 50th Anniversary Celebration.   Started from a measley $800 and a single "Come To Me" by the legendary Marv Johnson, Motown became one of the most influential record labels in music history.   On January 9th Motown Records with it's original creator/owner Barry Gordy kicked off their 2-year, 50th Anniversary which will commemorate Motown with a series of celebrations around the world.  (celebrations I have yet to get locations and dates for as I WILL be attending one or more).

Susan Whitall over at the Detroit News put together an excellent article about the Motown's 50th Anniversary, Barry Gordy's history and the label's overall importance to history in the  Motor City and music as a whole.    Hittsville USA (Motown Records' original headquarters) was home to the world famous "Studio A" aka "The Snake Pit" which is where artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie (The Commodores), Willie Hutch, Martha Reeves, Lamont Dozier (Holland-Dozier-Holland), The Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Teena Marie Aretha Franklin, Rick James and many other Motown icons recorded their masterpieces. Today Hittsville USA still remains at 2648 W. Grand Blvd in Detroit which stands as a state landmark and Motown Museum to this day. I still have yet to make the pilgrimage to Hittsville USA, but when I do, it will be a day that I will without a doubt never forget.

Happy Anniversary Motown.  Nearly all modern music wouldn't have been what it is today without your influence.  Thank you.

Big & Pac
I happen to be a pretty big Howard Stern fan so try to listen when I can. I tuned in during the replay of yesterday's show last night and I caught some audio of Artie Lange describing his conversation with Quincy Jones as he was on the phone making the decision to put Big and Pac on the cover of VIBE Magazine.

Pretty interesting... check it out.

LISTEN/DOWNLOAD: Artie Lange comments on Quincy Jones w/ Biggie & Pac

Note: Sorry for the poor quality, I had nothing to record with other than my Blackberry at the moment. If anyone has a better version, please hit me up!

//edit: The "Orlando" Artie is talking about in the clip is none other than Orlando Jones....

One of the hardest X-rated comedians ever passed away Sunday of diabetes.  He was 81 years-old.  I need not mention this man's massive influence on hip-hop.  R.I.P. Dolemite.

Last night, as I twittered while watching this joke of a production I thought, "Am I just getting old, or does this just REALLY suck?"  I mean, they cut off Lupe in the middle of his first verse to cut to commercial then later let some horrid punk band led by some amazingly annoying girl take the stage for the entirety of their song.  I mean, they literally shut down MTV Jams, (you know their only channel that actually PLAYS VIDEOS) and displayed a screen demanding that we watch the VMA's.  And this is the trash we're put through?  And to top it all off, Britney Spears walks with "best video of the year" FTW.  Nice.  It must have been last years deliciously amazing performance which really wowed the producers at MTV to bring her back again.   She stole the show.  And not only that, but can we PLEASE stop pretending to enjoy Kanye's singing.  He CAN'T SING.  HE CAN'T SING! HE CAN'T SING!! It's not profound, there's nothing to it.  Dude's a great rapper but he CAN'T SING!  *gasp* BLASPHEMY!  Should I just type the hate mail for you now so you can copy and paste it to me?

I just... I can't articulate my feelings clearly into words on this.. it's just.. well... well screw it, Rich says it ALOT better than me.

Clearly We've Learned Nothing

And he also put together some exquisite animations which sum up the entire show.

Don't really know what to say, but this cat will be seriously missed. For people who followed Def Comedy Jam, Bernie Mac was a familiar name. Fans of the HBO series knew who Bernie was long before Ocean's Eleven, Bad Santa, Guess Who, etc. For those who don't remember Mac's early days, peep a couple of the clips below. Before the big name movies, Mac made numerous appearances in urban films. Some of my favorite cameos were Jangle Leg in Life, Dollar Bill in The Players Club, and Uncle Vester in House Party 3.

When Bernie made a cameo, it was always memorable. I remember thinking to myself, 'what will it take for this dude to blow-up?'. On August 18, 2000 I got my answer as The Original Kings of Comedy debuted. On that night, Bernie stole the damn show. I remember thinking, 'finally......, Mac has his mainstream coming out party'. After Kings of Comedy, he went on to land his own series on FOX, larger roles in major movies, and the rest of the world was introduced to the Bernie Mac we'd been enjoying for years.

Bernie was an original dude, and had a personality and comedic style that can't be duplicated. Bernie Mac, another classic gone too soon.

The early years on Def Comedy Jam:

The Original Kings of Comedy (2000) Pt. 1

Pt. 2

Dude has too many good clips to post, so I'll be throwing up tributes during the week.

Can't wait to see the finished product. The movie will hit theatres January 16th. Just from watching this clip, it looks like they did a good job finding an actor to play the role. This guy definitely has some of the same physical characteristics as Biggie, I just hope his acting is on point.

Best of luck too, I'm already hearing shit about bootlegging going on AGAIN.  With any luck dudes can land a distribution deal on this one too and walk with a fat ass check.
