We're back with Phro in the building at our "other" basement this episode. We checked out Kendrick Lamar's new album, paid up on some post-A3C debt (Major having his Mayo shot and all our in-show shout outs) and as always, we spun some great independent hip-hop.
Seattle Washington's own took to the stage at Black Milk's Claps & Slaps tour stop at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Hell of an artist, and a super humble dude. I'm late to discovering J.Pinder, but as they say, better late than never. I needed this dude's music in my playlist and if you love some good lyrical, soulful music, you should too.
What can I say about him? Black Milk is by far one of the best indie stage acts out there right now for this simple reason: he entertains. That's a lot more than you can say for most artists out there who think they should be able to get on stage, rap and be paid. If you're familiar with Black Milk's music then when you hear these songs, you understand how much of a change up and work went into stepping up this show for his fans. Watch what happens at the 4:00 and the 5:20 mark. Crazy. At one point the drummer, Zeb Horton snaps a drum stick (he did 3 times that night) and keeps rollin with it.
If the Claps and Slaps Tour is coming to your town, you'd be missing out huge if you didn't check it out. Incredibly good show if you're music nerds like us or if you just wanna get down. #supportindiehiphop !!
The homie Big D and I came through to check out the Claps & Slaps tour featuring Black Milk with Nat Turner, J.Pinder and Ad.D+. All acts I was very much looking forward to seeing.
I tend to get overexcited about seeing some of my favorite artists perform. Especially when they do the unexpected, like completely change the instrumentals and break into an incredible jam session. Black Milk and the Nat Turner band did that other night at Ann Arbor, Michigan's Blind Pig for nearly every song he performed. Watch what happens at the 2:00 mark.
I already knew Black Milk had a hell of a stage presence and he's crazily creative, but not too many artists can take albums they released two and three years ago (Album of the Year and Tronic) and completely reformulate it and re-tour on their music. This was one hell of a show and I'm glad I didn't miss it, make sure you check for the Claps & Slaps tour landing in your hood.
Much respect. I have more footage and videos coming for Black Milk, J.Pinder and Ad.D+ so check back!
