Ski's 24 Hour Karate School sounds like it's going to be hot. This is the latest video from the project featuring Mos Def. That beat is fire, and Mos shows he can still get busy on the mic when he's not acting in front of the camera. The album drops on September 7th.

Kind of an odd combination of musicians, and I like it in a very strange way.  Written for Gulf Aid by Ben Jaffe and Mos Def, they assembled an unlikely cast of musicians, Lenny Kravitz, Trombone Shorty, Tim Robbins (yes the actor), and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for an all-night Jam session.  12 hours later, this is what they came up with.  Pretty cool if you ask me.

Cypher #1: Nicki Minaj, Joe Budden, Buckshot, Crown Royyal

Wow, this is the best thing BET could have done for their awards show.  It actually makes an asshole purist like myself wish I would have watched.   KRS-One, Wale, Nipsey Hussle, Gsan, Mos Def, Black Thought & Eminem after the jump.  They obviously saved the best for last with Mos Def, Black Thoguht & Eminem.

I may be biased for Detroit, but man.... Em KILLT it.

Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Mos Def's The Ecstatic is full of potential but falls flat far more often than it goes in. In all honesty, at first listen, I thought it was complete garbage but that's no way to critique a song let alone an album.  Days and dozens of plays later I've come to the conclusion that it does indeed get better but never become good enough.

"Supermagic", the first track of the record has to set the tone. Yet in hip-hop often your samples set tones, and the militant feel had me excited to hear what exactly Mos Def was going to bring to the table.  Although I found the actual song to be a bit airy, this track much like his entire album requires a clear mind, more than one listen and an appreciation for music in general, not just hip-hop.  In hindsight what "Supermagic" did was set the tone.  Expect medium paced rhymes on a rock/hip-hop hybrid style beats, with some trippy samples thrown in the mix.
